The material included in American Committee on Africa has been selected in close collaboration with academic subject experts, collections specialists at the Amistad Research Center, and under the guidance of the Editorial Board.

Our selection focuses on the following key series from the American Committee on Africa (ACOA) Records, 1948-1987:

  • Series 1: Administration, 1952-1972
  • Series 2: Programs and Activities in the United States of America and Canada, 1952-1986
  • Series 3: Programs and Activities in African Countries, 1948-1987
  • Series 5: Oversized Materials
  • Series 6: Audiovisual Materials

From Series 3 we have chosen correspondence and collected materials relating to the key African countries that the American Committee on Africa worked with and campaigned for, namely:

  • Algeria
  • Angola
  • Ghana
  • Guinea Bissau
  • Kenya
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia
  • Nigeria
  • Western Sahara
  • Tanzania
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe

Series 3 files relating to South Africa will be included in Module 2 of this resource - American Committee on Africa: Anti-Apartheid Movements and Democracy.

These series have been specifically chosen to enable examination of the history and work of the American Committee on Africa in North America and Africa up to c.1981 when George Houser retired as Executive Director.

In addition the resource also includes material taken from the George M. Houser Collection which provides material further highlighting the work of George Houser as Executive Director of the ACOA.

We have also selected audiovisual material from Series 5 of The Africa Fund Records comprising interviews and recordings made by George Houser for The Africa Fund.

A note on exclusions

Where exclusions have been made, this is largely due to:

  • Collections or series falling outside the defined remit of this resource - for example, Series 4 of the American Committee on Africa Records (Programs and Activities in Non-African Countries, 1956-1984)
  • Existing open-access content
  • Copyright and permission considerations
  • Data protection concerns
